Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Myer Classic is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Australian Thoroughbred horse race held under Weight for Age conditions, for fillies and mares aged three-years-old and upwards, over a distance of 1600 metres. It is held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne in October.

The Myer Classic is held on the same day as the Victoria Derby, which is the first day of the four day Flemington Spring racing carnival which is just three days before the Melbourne Cup in November.

The Myer Classic obtained Group 1 status in 2004 which gave Derby day four group one races for the day. In 2005 it changed its name from Nestle Peters Classic to its current name.
